There are many things to think about when you are starting a new website.  You will need to consider the design, you will have to think about the site’s structure, and you’ll need someone to write the written content.  And that’s not it!  If you want to draw new visitors to your website, you will need to do proper keyword research, come up with a website marketing plan and optimize your website for search engines (SEO.)

That’s a lot to to focus on all at once!

And all of those things are important.  If your website looks bad, people won’t stick around.  If your content is poorly written, you won’t be able to convince anyone to use your services or buy your products.  And if your site is not optimized for Google and other search engines, no one will ever find it.

Most people consider hiring a web designer to create a website for them but, unfortunately, they don’t do the same for their website copywriting and search engine optimization.  If you’re a skilled writer or have SEO knowledge then, by all means, do the writing and SEO yourself.  However, keep in mind that doing so takes a long time.  Writing your website’s content will take a lot longer than you think it will and SEO is a long, detailed process.

If you’re running your own business, you may not have time to do both of those things and still manage a company.

Just like you would consider hiring a web developer to design your website, you should consider hiring a freelance website copywriter and an SEO professional to handle those respective aspects of your site.  It will pay off in the long run.  Not only will you have more time to run your own business, but an experienced professional will likely have the knowledge needed to create great content and promote it well.

Frequently when I hear someone talk about SEO it’s in the context of “needing some SEO on their site.”

Of course, optimizing your web page to be found by search engines is something that you definitely do need.  But, thinking that adding SEO to a site is similar to adding a new graphic or banner is the wrong idea.  You can redesign your site and be done with it.  You can change your company logo and not have to update it frequently.

The same cannot be said for search engine optimization.
